Local authorities in Erbil in coordination and cooperation with UNHCR have made concerted efforts in establishing permanent refugee camps in and around Erbil to accommodate the massive influx of Syrian refugees to Erbil, which has increased significantly since August 2013. In the beginning, many of the refugees in August were settled temporarily in Kawergosk camp, Bahirka warehouse, schools and other buildings in Qushtapa, and in local schools and mosques in Basirma.
There are currently four permanent camps in Erbil: Kawergosk camp, Qushtapa camp, Darashakran camp, and Basirma camp.
According to the latest figures from Erbil’s local authorities and UNCHR, there are approximately 83,602 Syrian refugees in Erbil. Approximately 40% of refugees in Erbil are settled in refugee camps, while the rest have chosen to live outside of the camps.

Permanent Refugee Camps in Erbil:
· Kawergosk Refugee Camp, Khabat, Erbil
o Kawergosk refugee camp was the first camp to be established in Erbil. It was opened on 15 August 2013. The refugee population of the camp on 10 February 2014 was estimated to be 13,412 individuals. The majority of refugees at Kawergosk camp are from the town of Qamishli in Syria.
o Although, there are some shortcomings in the camp that need to be addressed, the overall situation of the camp is satisfactory. Shelter and infrastructure is well established, improved, and maintained in the camp. Also the need of households for basic and domestic items is met. However, accommodating additional refugees will require more land allocation. Two areas of concern in the camp are health and sanitation due to lack of advanced health services and limited availability of water supply.

o Darashakran camp was opened on 1 October 2013. Around 7,500 refugees are settled in this camp. The vast majority of refuges at the camp are from Qamishli.
o Lack of health services is the main problem facing Darashakran camp. Sanitation and water supply are available in the camp at a satisfactory level. Shelter and infrastructure is well established, improved, and maintained in the camp. Also the need of households for basic and domestic items is met. However, accommodating additional refugees will require more land allocation.

The main problems facing the camp are lack of health care service and sanitation problem due to limited availability of water supply. Shelter and infrastructure is well established, improved, and maintained in the camp. The camp has the capacity to accommodate more refugees. Also the need of households for basic and domestic items is met.

o Basirma Refugee camp was opened on 1 October 2013. The camp accommodates over 3000 refuges and it has the capacity to accommodate more. The majority of refugees are from Qamishli. The main problem facing camp residents is the lack of adequate health services and while sanitation, water services and shelter are available in the camp, the living conditions of the refugees needs improvement.
