Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani meets with British Consul General

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani today met with acting British Consul General in Erbil, Melanie Smart, to discuss reforms and the current economic situation in the region.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted the Kurdistan Regional Government remains committing to advancing reforms despite the precarious financial crisis and global pandemic, focusing on efforts to combat corruption and modernise its identification system through the biometric programme. He added that the next step of the programme will include a review of how public sector employee are assigned to positions.

They also discussed how to encourage British companies to invest in the Kurdistan Region, which has a number of sectors with untapped potential such as solar power, the construction of dams and reservoirs, water resource management, and others. Deputy Prime Minister Talabani added reforms within the Kurdistan Region’s banking sector would also benefit from the UK’s expertise with banking regulations and investment and trading laws.
