Runaki Project’s Impact on Cutting Emissions and Pollution Throughout Kurdistan Region

On World Environment Day, the Board of Environmental Protection and Improvement of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) proudly announces that, as part of the Runaki Project, 1,260 private residential generators — representing 17% of all such generators in the Kurdistan Region — have been shut down.

This significant action has substantially reduced environmental pollution, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 240,000 tonnes annually. This reduction is equivalent to taking approximately 250,000 vehicles off the roads.

Through compensation contracts, generator owners have agreed to shut down their generators, enabling households and businesses to receive electricity 24/7.

Moreover, shutting down the generators has eliminated the hazards posed by petrol depots, as well as noise and smoke pollution in residential neighbourhoods. This action has also saved approximately 1 million cubic metres of water that was previously used for cooling generators.

The objective is to achieve a reduction of 1.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by the end of 2026, alongside the provision of continuous, 24-hour electricity supply throughout the region. These environmental accomplishments of the Runaki Project constitute a key component of the KRG’s overarching strategy to promote a cleaner environment.
