Daily egg production exceeds domestic needs by 50%

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) - The Kurdistan Region has reached the level of self-sufficiency in egg production and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources has taken major steps to market eggs.

The Kurdistan Region exports 919 million and 800 thousand eggs annually, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, while focusing on cooperation with foreign markets.

At the same time, the decision to ban the import of eggs into the Kurdistan Region will continue, aiming to build a strong economic foundation, ensure food security and healthy food for citizens, as well as developing domestic production and create job opportunities.

Since the inauguration of the Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the projects of producing eggs increased to 33, which is a 200% increase compared to before while the annual capacity of producing eggs reached two billion 918 million and 577 thousand which is a 100% increase from before.

Projects and egg production fields divided on the cities as follows:

Erbil: 15 projects
Sulaimani: 11 projects
Duhok: 5 projects
Garmiyan: 2 projects

Previously the daily production of eggs was 1 million and 80 thousand, while the domestic need was 2 million and 520 thousand and the deficit was one million 440 thousand. But the level of production increased to five million 40 thousand in the Ninth Cabinet and two million 520 thousand of this rate is used to fulfill domestic need.


The daily production of eggs in Kurdistan Region is 14 thousand boxes, which is 50% over the domestic need. Seven thousand boxes are sent to foreign markets while the rest 7 thousand are distributed over local markets.
