Five projects to build ponds in Zakho will be implemented

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) - The Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has decided to build 41 ponds throughout the Kurdistan Region in order to preserve and collect water.

Five of these projects will be built in Zakho independent administration. These are strategic projects for water retention on the Khabur River, costing three billion Iraqi dinars and will raise water levels by about three meters.

“The construction of three ponds has been completed and the other two are under construction,” Head of Zakho’s Media Department, Shivan Abdi told the KRG’s official website.

Abdi said the ponds are nearly three meters high and 53 meters long, and 200 workers and equipment have worked on the project. Seventy-five percent of the workers were local.

The ponds will ease the process of cleaning Khabur river and increase its water levels. Once all five ponds are completed, they will benefit the agriculture products and tourism sector of the area.
