Kurdistan to host the 2024 CONIFA World Football Cup
The Kurdistan Football Association has announced that the Kurdistan Region will host the 2024 CONIFA World Football Cup.
Jalal Saeed, spokesman for the Kurdistan Football Association, told the Department of Media and Information that the games will start in mid-2024 with the participation of teams from 16 regions.
Shwan Aziz, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Olympics Committee, told the Department of Media and Information that matches will be played in Sulaymani, Erbil, Duhok, and Zakho.
A CONIFA delegation visited Kurdistan in March to assess the safety of stadiums before confirming the region’s suitability for hosting the events.
According to information obtained earlier by the Department of Media and Information, eight other regions had applied to host the competition. The Kurdistan Olympics Committee have confirmed that all necessary preparations will now be taken to ensure a successful tournament.
The CONIFA World Football Cup is an international football tournament for states, minorities, stateless peoples, and regions unaffiliated with FIFA, which has been held every two years since 2014. The first competition was held in Sweden with the participation of 12 teams.
