Erbil International Airport Earns High Rating from ICAO

Erbil International Airport (EIA) has achieved notable success on the global stage, coinciding with a significant increase in passenger traffic in 2023. The airport welcomed 2.084 million passengers, an increase of approximately 384,000 compared to 2022.

On 6 June 2024, Ahmed Hoshyar, Director of Erbil International Airport, announced, “EIA scored 80 or higher in the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) assessment, which evaluates airport quality worldwide.” This high score reflects the airport's adherence to international aviation standards and its commitment to quality.

Hoshyar emphasised the airport’s success despite the security challenges in Iraq, stating, "Iraq is considered a red zone in terms of security, leading to many air restrictions. However, the success of EIA has been significant for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, elevating the standards of Iraqi aviation." EIA remains the only airport in Iraq offering direct flights to Europe, enhancing its strategic importance.

The airport operates around 100 flights daily, with expectations to exceed 105 flights during peak travel periods starting from 15 May. The robust security apparatus, advanced digital management systems, and cost-effective services for travellers have positioned EIA as a leader in Iraqi aviation.

Significant developments include the new cargo terminal, under construction since 2021 on an area of 24,000 square metres, now 85% complete. Once operational, the cargo volume at EIA is projected to double from 2,000 to 4,000 tonnes per month.

Opened on 29 April 2005, Erbil International Airport was initially constructed as an Iraqi military base in the 1970s. Today, it stands as one of the busiest airports in the region, with a 4,800-metre runway, the eighth longest in the world.
