Kurdistan Set to Export 5,000 Tonnes of Potatoes to Saudi Arabia

Farmers in the Kurdistan Region have commenced the potato harvesting season, with an anticipated production of 750,000 tonnes in 2024. Next week, 5,000 tonnes of potatoes will be exported to Saudi Arabia.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) supports farmers by marketing their produce. The General Directorate of Agriculture in Erbil issues permits to farmers, allowing them to transport their products across Iraq.

Hemin Sayed Murad, the Director General of Agriculture in Erbil, explained that a mutual understanding between the KRG and the Iraqi government has enabled farmers to market their products outside the Kurdistan Region. He added that controlling the region's borders during the harvesting season increases demand for domestic products, helping farmers to expand their sales.

The KRG’s Ninth Cabinet prioritises agriculture, leading to increased agricultural production and continued support for marketing efforts.
