Erbil Citadel and Choli Minaret Undergo Major Restoration to Preserve Historic Identity

As part of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s ongoing efforts to preserve cultural and historical heritage, extensive restoration is underway at the Erbil Citadel, while restoration work on the Choli Minaret is set to begin shortly. Both iconic landmarks are being carefully preserved to maintain their original character and to strengthen their status as major tourist destinations.

The Erbil Citadel - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements - is being restored under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The project is being implemented in line with international archaeological and cultural heritage standards, ensuring the preservation of the citadel’s historic appearance, architecture, and street layout.

Supervised by the High Commission for the Citadel’s Restoration, several major projects have been implemented within the past year, including:

- Restoration of the historic mosque within the Citadel
- Stone paving of streets and alleyways in a traditional style (95% complete)
- Structural measures to prevent the collapse or deterioration of ancient walls and buildings
- Installation of safety points across the site
- Modern lighting systems along external paths and interior spaces
- Preparation for the opening of a dedicated Children’s Museum

Spanning 110,000 square metres and comprising 506 residential buildings, the Erbil Citadel will also feature a cultural teahouse, restaurant, and hotel — designed to offer an exceptional visitor experience.

Meanwhile, the Choli Minaret — rising 37 metres high and considered one of Kurdistan’s oldest and most prominent archaeological landmarks — is scheduled for restoration. The project will focus on:

- Replacing damaged sections of the minaret’s exterior walls
- Filling structural gaps to improve stability
- Installing surveillance systems to ensure protection
- Removing hazards from the surrounding area

Upon completion, the project will secure the long-term preservation of the minaret and transform it into a prominent archaeological tourism site, welcoming both local and international visitors.
