KRG Mine Action Restores Safety and Land Rights in 52 Cleared Areas

As part of its ongoing efforts to protect citizens, support reconstruction and safeguard the environment, the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has achieved significant progress in landmine clearance across the Region.
Through the work of the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA), more than 11.3 million square metres of contaminated land have been successfully cleared.
This operation has resulted in the complete clearance of 52 minefields, which have now been returned to their rightful owners - substantially improving public safety, local livelihoods, and community well-being.
IKMAA teams have safely destroyed over 20,856 landmines and more than 125,627 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO), eliminating serious threats to human life and the environment.
In parallel with clearance operations, IKMAA has launched a Region-wide awareness campaign to educate the public on the dangers of landmines and explosive remnants of war. Awareness teams are regularly deployed to border areas and high-risk communities from Garmian to Zakho, providing critical safety information and guidance.
Public Safety Notice:
Citizens are strongly urged to report any sighting of landmines, explosives, or suspicious objects by calling IKMAA’s free hotline: 182 immediately.
