KRG’s Strategic Initiatives to Enhance Food Security

Food security has been a strategic priority for the Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
As part of its efforts to strengthen the region’s agricultural resilience, three modern grain silos have been completed, with several additional facilities under construction. Once operational, these silos will collectively provide storage capacity for up to 200,000 tonnes of wheat.
Public investment in agriculture has risen significantly, increasing from 1.8% to 10% of the regional budget. This has facilitated the establishment of 30,000 plastic greenhouses and 319 cold storage facilities, improving both agricultural productivity and post-harvest storage capacity.
During this period, more than 11,000 companies have been officially registered, operational permits have been granted to 1,650 factories, and — importantly — agricultural products from the Kurdistan Region were formally exported for the first time.
The KRG remains committed to promoting local production, reducing reliance on imports, and developing a resilient economic base capable of withstanding regional and global shocks.
