KRG Strengthens Water Security Through Strategic Infrastructure Development

The Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has consistently prioritised water security, spearheading the construction of numerous dams, ponds, and clean water initiatives throughout the region.
During its tenure, the Cabinet has completed the construction of eight dams, with several additional projects currently underway. Once completed, these dams will collectively store over 250 million cubic metres of water. In parallel, 23 ponds have been completed, while work continues on a further 58.
Several key clean water projects are also in progress, aimed at addressing long-term water challenges in cities across the region. Among the most prominent is the Erbil Water Supply Emergency Project.
In addition to water storage, the region’s dams and ponds contribute to groundwater purification and support critical sectors such as electricity generation, agriculture, and tourism.
