KRG Ministry of Education and KDC Sign MoU to Strengthen Kurdish Education Abroad

With the support of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the Ministry of Education and the Kurdistan Diaspora Centre (KDC) are set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance and expand Kurdish education abroad.
Saman Siwayli, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, stated that since 2022, the ministry has been collaborating with the KDC on a joint initiative to teach the Kurdish language to children of Kurdish descent living abroad. To date, 1,000 students have benefited from online lessons, gaining skills in reading and writing in Kurdish.
The programme also incorporates elements of Kurdish culture, national events, and the historical struggles of the Kurdish people, fostering a deeper connection to their heritage.
Siwayli further explained that the purpose of today’s MoU is to formalise and expand the initiative by establishing the Directorate of Kurdish Studies Abroad within the Ministry of Education. Additionally, efforts are being made to integrate more teachers from within the Kurdistan Region into the system.
The KRG continues to support Kurdish schools abroad, particularly in Europe, working closely with the KDC, which overseas and supervises these institutions. To date, 2,450 Kurdish language textbooks have been distributed to these schools, with plans to bring them all under the KDC’s umbrella for more structured and comprehensive support.
Siwayli also highlighted that the initiative aims to incorporate all Kurdish language teachers working in diaspora schools into the official education system. This integration will grant them access to the Ministry of Education’s digital services (E-Parwarda), facilitating professional training and the development of specialised resources.
The MoU ultimately seeks to strengthen ties between the Ministry of Education, Kurdish schools overseas, and the global Kurdish community.
