KRG Launches Goptapa Water Project to End Chronic Water Shortage in Chamchamal District
The Goptapa Water Project is one of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) key strategic initiatives under its ninth cabinet, aimed at addressing chronic water shortages in the Chamchamal district.
The project will generate 3,400 cubic metres of clean water per hour, supplying safe drinking water to the towns of Chamchamal, Aghjaler, Takiya, and Shorsh, as well as 17 surrounding villages.
With a total investment of IQD 114 billion, the project has reached 20 percent completion. It includes a water intake unit, a central pumping station, a water treatment facility in Aghjaler, a pumping unit in Qshlakh, and a water reservoir in Takiya. The main transmission line from the intake point to Chamchamal will span 58 kilometres.
Upon completion, the Goptapa Water Project is expected to permanently resolve the decades-long water crisis affecting the area.
