KRG Launches Second Phase of Major Erbil Wastewater Treatment Project

On Sunday, 16 November 2025, Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), will lay the foundation stone for the second phase of the Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This initiative is one of the largest environmental infrastructure projects in the Kurdistan Region, with a KRG investment of $579 million. The plant will be constructed on 205 acres in western Erbil and will have the capacity to treat 840,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day, including both black and grey water.

Designed to meet Erbil’s needs for the next three decades, the project will support the city’s population growth and future development. The local company Awzan will implement the second phase, following the completion of the first phase by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project comprises three key components:

Component 1:

Construction of a 21.9-kilometre sewer network, including 5.3 kilometres developed with Pipe Jacking technology, which allows underground installation without disrupting streets.

Component 2:

Establishment of a modern wastewater treatment plant using multi-stage processes - screening, aeration, and filtration. Treated water will be reused for various purposes, particularly in agriculture.

Component 3:

A two-year operation and maintenance period to ensure sustained and efficient operation.

This phase of the project carries major environmental and public health benefits:

a- Protects natural water sources and preserves groundwater.

b- Reduces the spread of waterborne diseases.

c- Supports sustainable agriculture and complies with international environmental standards.

Once completed, the project will play a vital role in creating a cleaner and healthier urban environment for future generations.
