KRG Takes Major Steps to Protect Kurdistan’s Environment
Protecting the environment, preserving forests, and tackling climate pollution have been major priorities of the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which has taken significant action to achieve these goals.
Dozens of non-compliant refineries have been shut down, private diesel generators decommissioned, and by the end of next year, the entire Kurdistan Region is expected to enjoy 24-hour electricity without harmful emissions.
A total of 11.4 million square meters of land have been cleared of mines, natural gas now accounts for 83% of electricity generation, and the region’s green coverage has increased from 15% to 18%.
To further protect forests, 34 million firebreaks have been established, and for the first time, an asphalt recycling plant has been launched to repurpose used asphalt.
