KRG Expands Access to Quality Healthcare with New Hospital in Duhok Governorate

On Wednesday, 22 October 2025, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) officially inaugurated the Shorsh-Hetit Public Hospital in Deraluk, Duhok Governorate.

The four-storey facility, built at a cost of $43 million, spans 43,000 square metres and accommodates 100 beds.

It is equipped to provide a comprehensive range of medical services, including emergency and primary care; six major and minor operating theatres; dialysis, mammography, and ultrasound units; a fully equipped laboratory; obstetrics and neonatal care; intensive care and specialised treatment; as well as microscopy, laparoscopy, and natural therapy services. The hospital is expected to serve more than 250,000 residents in the surrounding areas.

The Ninth Cabinet of the KRG has placed strong emphasis on advancing the healthcare sector as part of its broader development agenda. To date, 67 hospitals and 31 specialised centres have been renovated, while 8 new hospitals and rehabilitation and cancer treatment centres have been established. Additionally, dozens of advanced medical devices and other strategic equipment have been distributed across the region to further strengthen healthcare services and improve citizens’ well-being.
