KRG Expands Dam and Pond Construction to Enhance Water Security and Climate Resilience

Under the leadership of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ninth Cabinet, significant progress has been achieved in expanding and modernising the Region’s water infrastructure. Nine dams have been constructed at a total cost of approximately IQD 266 billion, providing a combined storage capacity of around 253 million cubic metres of water.

In addition, 23 ponds have been completed, with construction ongoing for a further 58.

These projects form a key component of the KRG’s broader water management strategy, aimed at safeguarding groundwater resources, enhancing agricultural productivity, and supporting rural communities. They also contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change and drought, while promoting sustainable tourism and regional development across the Kurdistan Region.
