New Multi-Lane Highway to Link Erbil and Koya by 2026

Construction on the Erbil–Koya Strategic Road Project is progressing steadily, marking a major step forward in the Kurdistan Regional Government’s infrastructure development agenda.
The project is designed to international standards and aims to significantly improve regional connectivity, safety, and economic integration.
The new road extends 37 kilometres, featuring three lanes in each direction, with each lane measuring 12 metres in width. The carriageway will be paved with three layers of asphalt totalling 22 centimetres in thickness, ensuring long-term durability and smooth travel.
In addition to the main roadway, the project includes six overpasses, five underbridges, a 250-metre main bridge, and 160 concrete waterways to improve drainage and prevent seasonal flooding.
Following route clearance, construction of overpasses and underbridges is currently underway. The entire project is being executed by local contractors and labour, and work is on track for early completion ahead of schedule.
Upon completion, the Erbil–Koya road will replace the existing hazardous single-lane route with a modern multi-lane carriageway, reducing travel time to just 27 minutes and greatly enhancing road safety and transport efficiency for commuters and commercial traffic alike.
