Deputy PM Qubad Talabani meets with US Assistant Secretary of Defense

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani today met with Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Celeste A. Wallander, US Ambassador to Iraq, Alina Romanowski, and US Consul General in Erbil, Irvin Hicks Jr. to discuss the security partnership between the US and the Kurdistan Region.

Thanking the US for its ongoing support to the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga, Deputy Prime Minister Talabani outlined progress within the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs to strengthen and reorganize its forces. He noted these efforts will help enhance coordination with the US and coalition forces, reinforcing the Kurdistan Region’s position as a strategic partner advancing peace and security in the region.

The Deputy Prime Minister also welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs and US Department of Defense on the continuation of US support to the Peshmerga, which he stressed will have a positive impact in the fight against terrorism in the region and help contribute to the long-term stability of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Both sides discussed further developing ties between the Kurdistan Region and the US, namely through military and trade exchanges.
