Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani on Monday met with the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs and the Minister of Culture and Youth to discuss efforts by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to end violence against women and girls in the Kurdistan Region.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the need for more comprehensive solutions to this issue and greater support for these initiatives from the government and civil society. This includes changes to existing laws and regulations, more accountability and justice for victims, and greater gun control, as well as proposals to develop coordination mechanisms to facilitate the work of shelters.

Deputy Prime Minister Talabani also welcomed suggestions on how to leverage the use of media and social media to raise awareness on this issue, similar to efforts with the Union of Religious Scholars to get them to participate in campaigns to end violence against women.

He also noted that ending violence against women and girls is one of the ninth cabinet’s priority.
