Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Meets British Military Delegation

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today received a high-level British military delegation led by the UK’s Defence Senior Adviser on the Middle East, Lieutenant General Sir John Lorimer.

An update was provided by Prime Minister Barzani on the latest arrival of displaced people following the Turkish-led military escalation in northeast Syria. He informed the delegation that the Kurdistan Regional Government stands ready to fulfil its international obligations and accept refugees.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani made clear that the Kurdistan Regional Government is already making a huge sacrifice by continuing to host 1.1 million displaced people who fled conflict and persecution.

Following an informed discussion, the British military delegation acknowledged that this new insecurity in the region increases the risks of another humanitarian catastrophe and threatens the security of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The officials were in agreement that the crisis must be solved through a stable political solution which enshrines the rights of all Syrians, including the Kurdish people.

Lieutenant General Lorimer praised the ongoing efforts the new Kurdistan Regional Government to maintain constructive dialogue with the federal government of Iraq and build a stable partnership that recognises that Kurdistan Region’s rights under the constitution.
