Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Meets With the German Ambassador to Iraq
Erbil, Kurdistan Region (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today received the German Ambassador to Iraq, Ole Diehl, and German Consul-General in Erbil, Barbara Wolf.
Prime Minister Barzani expressed his gratitude to the German government for extending its military mission in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. He welcomed Germany’s ongoing training programme with Peshmerga forces as part of its commitment to the fight against terrorism in the region.
Prime Minister Barzani discussed with the German delegation the continued threat posed by ISIS, despite the death of its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as well as the instability in northeastern Syria. Ambassador Diehl agreed that continued international assistance to the Kurdistan Region was necessary in light of the current humanitarian crisis.
Highlighting that the Kurdistan Region is home to over 1.1 million refugees and internally displaced people, Prime Minister Barzani affirmed that his government will continue to open its doors to those fleeing conflict and persecution.
Addressing the ongoing public demonstrations in Iraq, Prime Minister Barzani recognised the legitimate demands of protesters but denounced the use of violence, expressing his hope that a peaceful resolution can be found.
