Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Receives Leader of Syria's Tomorrow Movement

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today met with the Leader of Syria’s Tomorrow Movement, Ahmad Jarba.

Mr. Jarba updated Prime Minister Barzani on the dire situation in the northeast of Syria and the growing humanitarian threat posed by Turkey’s unilateral military operation into the country.

The Prime Minister condemned the use of violence against civilians and warned against possible campaigns of forced demographic change occurring in northern Syria. He reaffirmed that the consequences of military escalation have implications far beyond Syria’s borders, creating the conditions for a return of ISIS and a mass displacement of people.

On the humanitarian situation, the Prime Minister confirmed that talks are ongoing with UNHCR and other international organisations and the KRG has a response plan in place which includes providing sheltered camps.

Prime Minister Barzani confirmed the importance of dialogue between all parties in the conflict, including the Kurdish parties, to de-escalate the situation and prevent the further loss of innocent lives.

Both sides agreed that a political solution, which respects the rights of all Syrians, including the Kurdish people, must be reached to stabilise the country and put an end to Syria’s protracted war.
