Prime Minister Masrour Barzani receives US State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq Affairs
Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday met with David Copley, the US State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq Affairs, to discuss the latest developments in the region.
Recognising the long standing friendship between the Kurdistan Region and the US, Prime Minister Barzani informed the Deputy Assistant Secretary and US Consul General in Erbil, Rob Waller, of his government’s readiness to assist on regional matters. As they discussed current events in Iraq, the officials highlighted the importance of strengthening the partnership between the US and the Kurdistan Region.
Prime Minister Barzani conveyed his government’s commitment to finding a peaceful, political solution to outstanding disputes with the federal government, adding that respect for the constitution and the principles of equality is crucial to achieving as well as maintaining peace and stability in Iraq and the region. The Prime Minister noted that support from the international community has been essential in helping bridge gaps with Baghdad and thanked the US for its ongoing support.
Prime Minister Barzani also reaffirmed the government continues to make progress with its ambitious reform agenda, working to diversify its economy and revenue sources, as well as developing the agricultural sector in particular. The Prime Minister outlined the Kurdistan Regional Government’s efforts to attract local and foreign investors, and welcomed further US investment toward a stronger economy.
Deputy Assistant Secretary Copley acknowledged the US remains a steadfast ally to the Kurdistan Region and the importance of further strengthening ties with the Kurdistan Region, with a particular focus on trade relations. As part of efforts to boost trade, a conference will be held next month to promote the Kurdistan Region as a preferred trading partner and encourage US investment.
