Statement by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on the Anniversary of the Anfal Genocide
Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today released the following statement on the 33rd anniversary of the Anfal Genocide:
“Today, thirty-three years have passed since the Anfal campaign, which was carried out in cold blood by the former Baathist regime, and killed thousands of innocent people, destroyed thousands of villages, towns, mosques, and schools, dozens of Churches in Kurdistan, burned down crops, vineyards, gardens and farmland, and systematically attempted to destroy the very foundation of our way of life. On this solemn anniversary, we honour the memory of the martyrs and the victims of this genocide.
“The Kurdistan Regional Government continues to work toward more reparations and support for the families of the Anfal campaign. Our efforts aim to provide them a higher quality of life, while securing material and moral compensation for the victims and their families as well as all the people who suffered at the hands of the brutal dictatorial regime of Iraq.
“I hope this anniversary will serve as a reminder to all that we must stand united as a nation, and deepen the spirit of reconciliation, brotherhood, and peaceful coexistence among all the nations of the region.
“We salute the pure souls of the martyrs and the victims of Anfal, whose memory will always remain alive in our hearts and minds.”
Masrour Barzani
Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government
