Prime Minister Masrour Barzani meets with Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate representatives

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today met with Azad Hamadamin, Head of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate, and other representatives to discuss press integrity and freedom in the Kurdistan Region.

The representatives briefed the Prime Minister on the activities of the syndicate, including their efforts to defending and promoting journalistic principles in the Kurdistan Region. They also recognized the need for greater legal and professional standardization in media to ensure responsible and accountable reporting and broadcasting.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s support for the work of journalists in the region, notably the role they play in informing the public and raising awareness. He reinforced the Kurdistan Regional Government welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with journalists in identifying and addressing issues or public concerns, to promote good governance in the Kurdistan Region and for the government to remain accountable to the people.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that freedom of speech is a key foundation of any developed, democratic society, and added that the Kurdistan Regional Government will continue to support the media and free speech. He cautioned that the integrity of the press and public interest in the Kurdistan Region should not be undermined by those who use the media for defamatory, libelous, and disruptive purposes.
