Statement by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on the Anniversary of March 1991 Uprising
Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani issued the following statement to mark the 30th anniversary of the March 1991 Kurdish uprising.
“On the anniversary of the glorious uprising of March 1991, I congratulate the people of Kurdistan, especially the brave Peshmerga and the families of our honourable martyrs.
“The March 1991 uprising is one of the greatest achievements of the people of Kurdistan. As people from all walks of life and across party lines united, they succeeded in rejecting oppression, occupation, and subjugation.
“The uprising was a revolutionary moment in the historical struggle of the Kurdistan people’s liberation movement, and led to the creation of the federal entity we now proudly call the Kurdistan Region, its institutions, and its constitutional right to exist.
“Today, every individual, party, and faction in Kurdistan has the righteous duty to stand united to defend the achievements of our nation and the constitutional rights of the people of Kurdistan.
“The moral values of the uprising and the principles of peaceful coexistence, forgiveness, peace, and humanity that the people of Kurdistan honourably carry must always be protected and supported.
“May the anniversary of the uprising inspire greater support tor the Kurdistan Regional Government in its efforts to implement reforms, provide better services to all the people of Kurdistan, and, together, develop the Kurdistan Region to its fullest potential.
“Stand tall and proud as we observe the anniversary of the March 1991 uprising as we commemorate the sacrifices of the martyrs of the uprising and of all the martyrs of Kurdistan.”
