PM Masrour Barzani meets with Governor of Basra Province

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani today met with Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani and member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Aras Habib Kareem, to discuss inter-provincial cooperation and development.

Prime Minister Barzani affirmed the Kurdistan Region is always exploring opportunities to develop mutually-reinforcing and beneficial relationships with partners in the region, including Basra and other Iraqi provinces. He noted that Iraq is rich in human potential and natural resources, and good governance could help transform Iraq into one of the region’s most developed countries.

Both officials agreed that federalism must remain a key pillar of Iraqi governance, and warned that the centralisation of power would exclude the Kurdistan Region and the provinces of Iraq from meaningfully participating in the political and decision-making process to the detriment of the country.

The Governor highlighted Basra’s positive experience exchanging expertise and knowledge with the Kurdistan Region in the field of construction and service-delivery. He also noted that the development of the Kurdistan Region is a success that is shared by all Iraqi governorates and reminded that it does not come at the expense of other parts of Iraq.
