KRG Prime Minister Holds Meeting with UNAMI Chief
On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the Kurdistan Regional Government's Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, engaged in discussions with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Their meeting focused on the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
Prime Minister Barzani reiterated his commitment to the elections and underscored the paramount importance of conducting them in a timely manner under normal circumstances, ensuring fairness and adherence to constitutional principles without any predesigned interference. He underlined the necessity of upholding the constitutional status of the Kurdistan Region while safeguarding the rights of its diverse ethnic and religious components.
Prime Minister Barzani also emphasised the critical role of the international community in monitoring the electoral process to ensure its integrity and legitimacy.
Both parties acknowledged the necessity of addressing all challenges and obstacles in order to preserve the democratic process and maintain stability in the Kurdistan Region.
