KRG Prime Minister Receives US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East

On Thursday, 11 July 2024, Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), received Daniel Shapiro, the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East. The meeting was attended by Alina Romanowski, the United States Ambassador to Iraq and Major General Joel B. Vowell, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve.

Mr. Shapiro reiterated the United States support for the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga forces, emphasising that the Kurdistan Region is a crucial and strategic partner in the war against terror and desires to enhance security and military cooperation with the region. The two sides discussed the progress of the reforms at the Ministry of Peshmerga.
Mr. Shapiro thanked Prime Minister Barzani for his continuous efforts towards reform and the unification of Peshmerga forces. He noted that the United States and the international coalition will continue to support the Peshmerga forces in combating terrorism, especially against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists.

Prime Minister Barzani thanked the delegation for the continued support to the Kurdistan Region and stressed the need to strengthen bilateral relations with the United States in various fields.
