KRG Prime Minister and British Ambassador to Iraq Discuss Bilateral Relations

On 13 March 2024, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani held a meeting with the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Iraq, Steven Hitchen.

Their discussions focussed on the strengthening of bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom. They also addressed recent regional developments and the resolution of ongoing issues between Erbil and Baghdad, in alignment with the Iraqi constitution and established accords.

Both parties emphasised the importance of upholding security and stability within the Kurdistan Region, as well as respecting its federated status within Iraq.

Ambassador Hitchen highlighted the UK's commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the Kurdistan Region, continuing cooperation across various fields with the KRG.

Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed the region's steadfast commitment to defending its constitutional rights, regardless of external pressures.

The meeting also reaffirmed a shared commitment to the reform efforts led by the Ministry of Peshmerga and to safeguarding the rights of the region's diverse ethnic and religious communities. An emphasis was placed on the need for the establishment of the Federal Council to bolster Iraq's governance structure and protect the rights of all the components in the country.
