Statement by KRG on the incident in front of UN office in Erbil

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Media and Information today issued the following statement regarding the incident that involved a civilian in front of the United Nations’ office in Erbil:

“Today, a refugee from the city of Bukan, in western Iran, carried out an act of self-immolation in front of the United Nations headquarters in Erbil.

“While we express our deepest concerns regarding this tragic incident and the individual in question, we strongly condemn the actions of media organisations that covered the brutal incident with no regard for journalistic integrity and ethics nor the Kurdistan Region’s broadcasting laws and guidelines.

“Authorities will take measures to prevent such inaction and inhumane behavior from occurring again.”
