KRG Approves Proposed Reforms for Public Services

On November 22, 2023, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani chaired a session of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Council of Ministers, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani.

The session began with a report by Siraj Barzani, Director of the Public Service Council, on the KRG’s public sector workforce. The report included detailed figures and data, aiming to institutionalise the recruitment process by aligning it with the administrative structures and staffing needs of government institutions.

The Director presented detailed proposals and recommendations for reorganising public sector recruitment in line with current legislation.

He also discussed the outcome of a joint audit by federal and KRG boards, noting that all relevant lists and data have been submitted for review. This audit aims to ascertain the number of salaried employees in the KRG, with joint reports submitted to both the federal government and the KRG.

After the presentation, the Council deliberated on the recommendations and urged the KRG to collaborate with the Public Service Council to implement more effective standards in public sector recruitment.

Additionally, Dr. Abdulahakim Khasro, Head of the Department of Coordination and Follow-Up, reported on the KRG’s programme of reforms, particularly in public service and pensions. The Council of Ministers highlighted the importance of continuing this programme, emphasising its role in improving the organisational structure of the Region’s civil service.
