IKMAA Demarcates Thousands of Metres Affected by Land Mines and Explosives
In an effort to raise public awareness about the danger of mines and explosives, the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) has begun marking tens of thousands of metres of land with red triangle landmine signage throughout the Kurdistan Region.
Jabbar Mustafa, the head of IKMAA, explained that the original demarcation signs have been moved or destroyed due to weather. Consequently, IKMAA has started re-demarcating minefields to prevent and warn the public and tourists, particularly as many mountaineers use these areas for hiking and picnics. Unfortunately, many people still die from mines and explosives every year.
To protect the lives of villagers and their livestock, IKMAA teams in the Bardarash District have demarcated more than 600,000 metres. Mustafa emphasised that this process will continue throughout the Kurdistan Region, focusing on raising awareness among residents of affected areas and urging them to maintain IKMAA’s red triangle landmine signage.
Currently, thousands of minefields have been registered by IKMAA, and the organisation continues to clear these fields daily.
