KMAA Advances Mine Clearance Efforts Across Kurdistan Region

The Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) continues its vital mine clearance operations, safely removing and destroying landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in multiple locations.

In Rawanduz District, IKMAA’s Erbil Office swiftly responded to a local alert, defusing two anti-personnel mines at the foot of Mount Handren and transferring them to secure storage.

In Pir Omar Village, Similan District, the DE6 manual demining team and EOD specialists cleared 43 anti-personnel mines from the hazardous Kruka Zard minefield. Of the 95,200 m² site, 91,700 m² have now been cleared, with a cumulative total of 2,922 mines and 140 UXO items removed to date.

The Slemani Office’s EOD team neutralised additional threats in Ahmad Klwan Village, Penjwen District, destroying artillery shells, mortar rounds, grenades, V69 mines, and an RPG round using non-electric detonation. Similar operations in Quay Naija Village, Said Sadiq District, destroyed newly discovered and previously relocated explosives, including mortar shells, grenades, V69 mines, and PD fuses.

In Duhok, the EOD team cleared the Sin Sakhar minefield in Zaweta Subdistrict, destroying 24 V69 mines and six UXO.
