Kurdistan Mine Action Agency Steps Up Efforts to Eliminate Explosive Threats

The Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) has launched a two-week campaign to clear mines and explosive remnants of war across the Kurdistan Region. During the operation, hundreds of mines and munitions were safely defused and destroyed.

Erbil Office Activities:
In three separate operations in Choman and Diyana, within the Soran District’s Tourism Masterplan area, IKMAA teams safely defused 236 mines and various explosive remnants. In Rawanduz District, two highly dangerous cluster munitions were also defused and destroyed by the Explosives Destruction Team.

Slemani Office Activities:
In Darbandikhan, 199 unexploded ordnance (UXO) were safely destroyed using non-electric blasting. At the Cham Wshk minefield, eleven V69 mines and several additional remnants were also neutralised and destroyed. Meanwhile, in Sharbazher District and Bakrajo, IKMAA teams conducted two missions, safely defusing and destroying 15 different types of UXO.

Duhok Office Activities:
In the Sin Sakhar minefield in Zawita District, 75 mines and explosive remnants were destroyed.

Garmian Office Activities:
In Kifri, several UXO were safely defused, while in Maidan a 150mm phosphorus shell was destroyed through controlled detonation.
