Ministry of Higher Education: Students from the Kurdistan Region Studying in Iran May Choose to Return or Remain in Their Programmes

To safeguard the well-being of students from the Kurdistan Region studying at universities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research affirms that these students are free to choose either to return to the Kurdistan Region or remain in Iran.

Abbas Akram, spokesperson for the Ministry, stated that considering the current regional circumstances and their potential implications, the Ministry has decided to grant students from the Kurdistan Region studying in Iran the flexibility to either return home or continue their studies in Iran until 1 July 2025.

The decision aims to prioritise students’ safety without disrupting their academic progress. The situation will be reviewed at the end of this period. Importantly, any time spent in the Kurdistan Region during this interval will be officially recognised as part of the students’ enrolment when their degrees are assessed for equivalency.
