Erbil City Centre is Set for Restructuring

On Wednesday, 18 December 2024, a special meeting convened to discuss the restructuring of Erbil city centre. The meeting was co-chaired by Sasan Awni, the Minister of Municipalities and Tourism of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and Omed Khoshnaw, the Governor of Erbil.

During the meeting, which was attended by representatives from various government departments, four distinct restructuring scenarios for Erbil city centre were presented and evaluated.

The overarching goal of this restructuring initiative is to cultivate a dynamic and thriving city centre that effectively integrates various urban functions including daily life, commerce, culture, tourism, residential living, and historical preservation. The plan also aims to enhance public services, stimulate job creation, improve environmental quality, promote pedestrian and cycling mobility, and mitigate traffic congestion and noise pollution, among other objectives.

The meeting emphasised the need to select one of the proposed scenarios for in-depth research and subsequent implementation to achieve the desired outcomes.
