On Thursday, 12 February 2026, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism launched the Erbil Heritage and Housing Planning Project, a key implementation phase of the Erbil Master Plan 2050 focusing on areas surrounding the Erbil Citadel. The project will be implemented in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and UN-Habitat.
The initiative aims to advance urban planning while preserving Erbil’s cultural heritage and supporting tourism development. Implementation is scheduled to begin next month and continue through to the end of the year.
The amendment process for the Erbil Master Plan 2050 has reached the approval stage and is expected to play an important role in heritage protection, housing planning, and the revitalisation of the tourism sector as part of the current cabinet’s urban development agenda.
