Kurdistan Regional Government Statement on the Anfal Genocide Anniversary

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – The Kurdistan Regional Government released the following statement on the 33rd anniversary of the Anfal Genocide:

“Thirty-three years have passed since the indiscriminate and horrific attacks by the former dictatorial Baathist regime on the Kurdish people, a campaign known as the Anfal campaign which buried thousands of people alive and caused tremendous pain and suffering for decades to come.

“On this day, we commemorate the tragic loss of thousands of innocent people and martyrs who experienced a brutal and ruthless genocide, and which continues to scar the region and the world.

“Fortunately, the people of Kurdistan are now prospering, and the dictators and perpetrators of the Anfal campaign have perished, which is a sign of our nation’s vitality and the failure of our enemies.

“The Kurdistan Regional Government remains committed to the families of Anfal victims and their needs, and we will continue to fight for their rights and demand material and moral reparations from the Federal Government of Iraq.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the martyrs and victims of Anfal and their families.”
