Statement by KRG Spokesperson on the anniversary of the March 11 Agreement

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) – The Kurdistan Regional Government Spokesperson and Head of the Department of Media and Information, Dr. Jotiar Adil, today issued the following statement:

“Today marks 51 years since the signing of the March 11, 1970 Agreement, an unprecedented formal agreement within the framework of the constitution of Iraq and the first time the national and political rights of the Kurdish people were acknowledged.

“The agreement, driven by the late Mullah Mustafa Barzani, was a major turning point and a strong foundational document for political and social reconciliation in Iraq and the beginning of a new political and diplomatic space for the Kurds.

“The March 11 Agreement was the basis for the first genuine attempt at democratic pluralism and peaceful coexistence in Iraq, and the laid out the principles of constitutionalism and federalism that the Kurdistan Regional Government now follows. The regional government also hopes that all Iraqi political parties will strive toward that idea and push for peace, stability, reconstruction, and progress for all peoples in the country.”
