The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has issued a statement asking citizens who have firearms (pistols and Kalashnikovs) to register their weapons after the New Year holidays, otherwise is treated as a smuggled weapon.

Here is the statement:

Dear citizens
The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) requests anyone who has weapons at home (only firearms: pistols and Kalashnikovs) and is not an employee of the security forces, please visit one of the following centers as soon as possible after the New Year holidays.

The registration of weapons is the first step in implementing the Weapons Law No. 2 of 2022, which sets a one-year period for this process, anyone in possession of an unregistered weapon after this year, which ends in July 2023, will be treated as a smuggled weapon.

When you register your weapon, the government does not take it away from you, but you take it with you and it is registered in your name. You do not have the right to take out or carry until you obtain a license to carry weapons. If you just keep the check registered in your name at home and don't take it out, you won't face any liability.

Please visit the following centers to register your weapons.
