OCIA and Heartland Alliance Organized a Workshop on Human Trafficking
Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (GOV.KRD) - The KRG Coordinator for International Advocacy, Dr. Dindar Zebari on Monday delivered a speech at the onset of a one-day workshop organized by KRG Office of the Coordinator for International Advocacy (OCIA) and Heartland Alliance on human trafficking.
This workshop falls within the scope of the implementation of the Regional Plan for Human Rights, which is a comprehensive framework to enhance the commitments to human rights and rule of law. It aims to create a space for sharing the views of governmental and non-governmental agencies with regard to combating human trafficking.
KRG propelled combating human trafficking to its top policies through establishing the Directorate of Combating Organized Crimes and enforcing a special legislation.
Human trafficking has been criminalized in the Kurdistan Region in July 2018, following the enactment of Law No 6 that ratified the Federal Anti-Trafficking Law of 2012. The penalties prescribed in the law include temporary, medium and life sentence, fines ranging from five to twenty-five million Iraqi dinar, and death penalty (it is not executed in the KR unless the crime is heinous). Law No 71 (1987) is executed to protect migrant workers. KRG added supplementary regulations to the law in 2013 and 2015.
