A delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is set to participate in the 27th Session of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) at the United Nations in Geneva, scheduled for 15-16 August 2024. This delegation, including the Chairman of the Special Committee on International Agreements and Treaties, will be part of the broader Iraqi delegation led by Iraq's Minister of Justice, Khalid Shwani.
Dindar Zebari, the Coordinator of KRG’s International Advocacy emphasised that the KRG’s involvement in the Iraqi delegation underscores the region's commitment to full adherence to international human rights treaties in collaboration with the federal government of Iraq.
He noted that the KRG delegation will contribute its observations alongside the Iraqi delegation, presenting a report on the laws, regulations, and practical measures implemented in the Kurdistan Region to align with international recommendations, particularly concerning the elimination of racial discrimination. During the session, the KRG delegation will highlight its human rights implementation plan for 2021-2025, which focuses on combating all forms of discrimination.
The Coordinator of International Advocacy further stated that the KRG delegation’s participation in the United Nations sessions in Geneva is a crucial opportunity to demonstrate the KRG’s compliance with international human rights principles and recommendations.
